Located in Ryde on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, this scenic bushland walk offers some of Australia’s best cycling terrain. It’s a great way to explore this picturesque natural environment and enjoy the fresh air around Ryde, NSW.
Shrimptons Creek Bushwalk and Cycleway was opened in 2003 and has since been recognised as a valuable environmental resource. It’s home to more than 500 plant species, countless birdlife and Australian native animals like the kangaroo, koala and echidna.
There are two sections of this fantastic walking trail – one is an easy stroll for those with limited time; another offers challenging climbs up some steep slopes for adventurers who want to get their heart rate pumping! Along the way you will find old timber bridges over gushing rivers that wind through rainforest gullies. The walk can be extended by joining on parts of Ryde’s extensive cycling network or following the path all the way into Ermington’s Town Centre where there are cafes, shops and train connections to Sydney.
Some of the highlights of checking this place out include:
- exploring the towering sandstone cliffs and seeing ancient Aboriginal rock art
- bird watching from the boardwalk to see magpie geese, wrens, crows or even kookaburras!
- climbing a great big boulder near Shrimptons Creek’s waterfalls for a stunning view of Sydney Harbour’s Killcare Bay.
- riding a bike along the track and seeing koalas!
- stopping for lunch at one of Shrimptons Creek’s many picnic zones or riverside cafes.
- using this as an excuse to explore some other parts of Sydney’s Northern Beaches like Palm Beach, Berowra Waters and Brookvale.
What You Need To Know Before Going
- The best way to get there is by car as there are no public transport options available. There is plenty of parking space available at both entrances (entrance on Cowan St in Ryde and entrance off Ermington Road).
- Dogs welcome with some restrictions regarding where they can be taken on this walk for safety reasons.
- There is a cafe and toilets available at the start of the walk on Cowan St in Ryde. Bring plenty of water, a map (download one from our website) or an app like Gaia GPS to help guide you through this great bushland trek.
- The walk is suitable for all levels of fitness. It’s a 13km return hike so make sure you wear comfortable shoes and carry enough food, water and your mobile phone with emergency contact details.
- This place is wheelchair accessible.
- If you don’t have any GPS with you, there are plenty of maps available at the entrance to help people find their way around. Just ask!
